Removal of contaminated material arising from the installation of the new underground pipeline at London City Airport. The material had a high level of contamination (significantly contaminated with heavy metals and PAH’s), which we removed and treated.
Stage 1: excavation and haulage to Silvertown facility
Stage 2: temporary storage of the contaminated soil in the facility
Stage 3: loading and shipping of the soil with ships of 12000MT
Stage 4: unloading in Harbour at Ghent
Stage 5: fysico-chemical treatment (washing) of the contaminated soil
Stage 6: use of the treated soil as a construction material
The advantages we offered for this Project were as follows:
- Sustainability – Our material is not placed into a landfill but recovered and recycled as building material in the construction industry
- Transport Efficiency - Shorter lorry journeys reduce carbon emission by about 80%, and nitrogen dioxide by about 35%
- Lower in Cost – due to the nearness of City Airport plus our low cost reprocessing technique
- Our approach delivered programme advantage
- All materials are backed with a comprehensive tracking and auditing process
- This approach complies with all current EU and UK environmental regulation and we are fully accredited
- We have met Carillion’s CSR (corporate, social, responsibility) objectives.

The redevelopment of Renault Car Factory in which 20,000 Tonnes of Contaminated Material was removed, segregated, treated and recycled. Anxious to being energy-efficient and open-minded to new means of transportation, Renault and AWS have chosen to use inland waterways for the shipment of the polluted concrete to the recycling-plant.
To avoid all risk of contaminating the environment, the concrete is recovered in a receptacle which protects the dock and bank. The use of inland waterways for transportation lead to a reduction of 75% of the emissions of carbon dioxide. Once the pollutants are extracted, the remaining gravel and sands can be reused as/for construction materials.
Stage 1: demolition and first separation between contaminated and clean material (concrete)
Stage 2: haulage to harbour of Paris (Nanterre) and loading into small barges (700MT)
Stage 3: shipment and unloading in harbour of Ghent
Stage 4: fysico-chemical treatment
Stage 5: use of recycled material in concrete production

On the site of an old chemical plant witch was demolished and buried 20 years ago Le Roy Merlin built a new mega shop (garden center, building materials, interior, decoration, ...). 130.000 MT of contaminated soil (mainly contaminated with heavy metals) had to be removed and treated. AWS offered the best solution in price, timing and recovery of the waste. Also the use of barges was an advantage to decide to work with AWS.
Stage 1: excavation and haulage to the Harbour of Mulhouse
Stage 2: temporary storage of the contaminated soil in the harbour
Stage 3: loading and shipping of the soil with barges of 3000MT
Stage 4: unloading in Harbour at Ghent
Stage 5: fysico-chemical treatment (washing) of the contaminated soil
Stage 6: use of the treated soil as a constuction material
The advantages we offered for this Project were as follows:
- Partner/Open-book - ensure the objectives of the Environmental Management System are excelled
- Reclaim/recycle – adopting best industry practice to achieve targets
- Reclaiming and recycling materials on-site - according with national, regional and local Government objectives
- Apply benchmark standards to delivery - Improving the health of employees, contractors and the wider community and the quality of the solution
- Comprehensive knowledge of decommissioning industrial sites
- In depth experience of contaminated demolition & decommissioning works
- Excellent understanding of the competence and capabilities required in the discipline
- In house environmental managers and engineers
- Experience of environmental management when carrying out sensitive demolition.
